Geminid Meteor Shower

Earlier today, bright meteors were visible over Saint Louis, briefly flashing across the sky and capturing widespread attention. Meteors—often called shooting stars or, when especially bright, fireballs—are small pieces of rock or metal from space that enter Earth’s atmosphere at extremely high speeds, heating up from friction and glowing as they burn apart high above the ground. Most disintegrate completely before reaching the surface, making them harmless despite their dramatic appearance. Events like this highlight the constant movement of debris through our solar system and offer a rare, striking glimpse of that activity from Earth.
